Project Description
“I Got Soul” is a story about a group of guys in a changing environment that needed to make a hit. But this night they happen to make two that would be heard around the world. “I Got Soul” is a dance film with very little dance, and a musical with very little music.
What happened at the historic recording session that produced the hits “Sex Machine” and ”Super Bad” on one faithful night in Tennessee in 1970. Where a young, 18 year old, bass player named Bootsy Collins records with superstar entertainer James Brown.
The film will not feature any original music by Brown or Collins but will explore the inspiration, collaboration and stark realities that led up to one of the most successful recording sessions of all time.
Marketing plan
The film “I Got Soul” has been accepted for a Kickstarter fundraising platform to finance the film.Once the Kickstarter campaign begins, it will include 30 days of fundraising. During the 30 days, we will have several James Brown flashmobs, a James Brown Tribute show and art exhibition, and also an “I Got Soul” day at SXSW. This will provide an international awareness of the film by teasing DJ’s, recording artists, and press to the film project. We will have a street team passing out posters and info on “I Got Soul”.
SXSW brought about 286,000 people to Austin, TX to attend the 2011 festival, a 45% increase from 2010.
Despite the economy, South by Southwest (SXSW) 2011 made about $167 million dollars for the Austin community.

Production Info
Higher Intention Productions is taking on what Hollywood couldn’t do. The Spike Lee biopic about the godfather of soul has been in pre-production for years lacking a firm casting choice. In response, Higher Intention Productions is producing a short film called “I got Soul”.
The film focuses on the historic recording session that produced the hits “Sex Machine” and ”Super bad” in one faithful night in Tennessee in 1970. Where a young 18 year old bass player named Bootsy Collins records with superstar entertainer James Brown.
Xavier Ramirez of Higher Intention Productions has written “I Got Soul” and is also directing the film. Ramirez has a strong focus on dance/musical motion pictures. His background as a professional dancer has led to many diverse credits including video footage used in the motion picture “Step Up”, and his feature documentary “Battlecry”.
Xavier Ramirez’s documentary film production and photography was featured in the April 9 issue of VIBE Magazine and the January 21st issue of Jet Magazine.
Ramirez was selected as a honorary board of directors for the “I Have a Dream Foundation”. Ramirez is founder and CEO of the International Dance Hall of Fame (IDHF). Ramirez handles special events and tours for the hall of fame’s “Legends of Dance” educational outreach program.
Xavier works as a script writer and as an entertaiment consultant for Los Angeles based JWE. Ramirez’s previous employment includes Hearst Publications, Clear Channel Communications, RCA Records/Its s Gas-artist development division, and work as a producer at Acceleration Studios.

The role of “The Godfather of Soul” will be played by 80’s superstar Michael Chambers. Chambers received international acclaim after playing the title role of “Turbo” in the MGM dance franchise “Breakin’”. Along with Chambers appearing in the dance mega hit, he was also featured in some of the most iconic MTV music videos of all time; including Chaka Khan’s “I feel for you”, Lionel Richie’s “All night long”, and Paula Abdul’s “Opposites attract”. Chambers has kept busy working behind the scenes for TV’s “Family Matters”, “The Simpsons” and “ER”. Chambers private instruction and consultation runs the gambit of entertainment heavy weights including the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. Chambers worked with Jackson on his solo dance style that later transcended into what we know now as classic Michael Jackson dance style.

“I have worked with Chambers on a variety of projects. One day I received a Fed-Ex package. Michael sent me a VHS of some rare footage of him performing Brown’s “Sex Machine” in Japan. Michael not only perfected James Brown’s steps but he did it faster than JB. I assumed he lip sank the song until I realized he was singing and dancing live! I was really floored. James Brown even acknowledges Chambers on back of one of his Albums.” - X Ramirez
Newcomer actor Andre Abrams has been working internationally as a professional dancer for a variety of acts, including “The Spirit of Michael” laser spectacular tour. Ramirez went to an Off Broadway stage show that Abrams dance crew, ‘Unified Soul’, produced and was featured in. “Working with actors for years, I was very impressed with Abrams timing, focus, and acting talent … not to mention he’s an amazing dancer. This really was a no brainier casting choice because Abram’s even looks like a young Bootsy.” -X Ramirez
